A 801
This worked so well that it is no longer an experiment but is a standard instrument. These tanks are used to detect neutrinos. These are very long lived particles because they do not often react with anything. Think of neutrinos as the gold of the particle world. A detector sensitive enough to see a particle event triggered by a neutrino will also detect billions of other events triggered by cosmic rays, light, heat and so on. The detector tank of water, or cleaning fluid or something, is buried deep underground to shield it from all these other events. Because more than 99 percent of neutrinos pass right through the Earth without reacting with anything, your chance of seeing a reaction is just the same deep underground as at the surface. There are several such detectors in the world. They worked well enough to count the number of neutrinos from a recent supernovae event, enabling the astronomers to check out their theories.
